Cosmetic Dentistry

Bonding is a procedure in which we apply a tooth-colored composite material to a tooth, shape it, allow it to harden and polish it. It can be used in certain situations where a tooth has been damaged or become stained. These are generally minor repairs, ones that can be resolved through this relatively inexpensive means rather than through a more costly dental procedure.

This is how you can get a beautiful smile quickly. Veneers or Laminates are a thin shell of porcelain or resin that is bonded to the surface of the teeth to change their shape, shade and position to improve the cosmetics of your teeth and smile and/or replace and restore the lost tooth structure where it is indicated.

Your dentist will do a complete examination of your teeth and will determine if veneers are indicated for you. Usually with veneers it is possible to improve the aesthetics of your teeth and smile dramatically.

Teeth stain during our lifetime due to consumption of a variety of foods and drinks (Coke, spicy food, coffee...). New technology of teeth whitening has enabled dentists to whiten teeth without any change or damage to the tooth structure.

Almost all the whitening methods are similar in concept but some are much more effective because of the way the whitening material is delivered to the teeth. The other factor in effectiveness of the method is the concentration of material, which is the reason why over the counter whitening systems usually don t give patients the result they are hoping for.

The two main methods of professional whitening are tray whitening and in-office whitening.

A dental bridge is a fixed (non-removable) appliance and is one of the traditional dental methods for replacing missing teeth.

The type of bridge used most often is called a fixed bridge, and consists of two crowns that go over two anchoring teeth (abutment teeth) and are attached on either side of the artificial teeth (pontics), filling the gap created by one or more missing teeth.

Dental bridges are highly durable and will last many years with proper home care; however, they may need to be replaced or re-cemented due to normal wear.

Composite Fillings
Fillings are used to restore areas of your tooth affected by decay. Dentists use composite (tooth-colored) materials to "fill in" the surface of the tooth after all decay has been removed. Dr. Rinta will answer any questions you have and will apply anesthetic to the tooth requiring the filling. Then Dr. Rinta will thoroughly remove the decay that is present and prepare the tooth to successfully bond with the composite material.

Do you have a broken, excessively worn out tooth, or a large portion of a tooth destroyed by tooth decay? The handy solution for an excessively cracked tooth is to get a dental crown or cap to cover the damaged tooth. Strengthen and restore your tooth back to its original shape with the help of Dr. Rinta. Dr. Rinta also offers Same Day Crowns using CAD/CAM technology.

A crown (cap) is a restoration that is placed on teeth that have lost a lot of their structure. There are many different types of crowns: full porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, full metal crowns. Your dentist will explain the advantages and disadvantages of each kind for you.

Dentures are a "replacement" option for missing teeth. There are two variations of dentures: partial dentures and full dentures. The difference between the two lies in how many natural teeth remain.

When the condition of the teeth has deteriorated so far that they can no longer be repaired, removal is the only option.

A complete denture is a removable prosthesis of white plastic teeth in a pink gum-colored plastic base; the denture rests on the remaining gum ridge once all of the teeth in the arch have been removed.

It is important to note that life with an upper and/or lower denture is a major lifestyle change when compared to natural teeth. Dentures impact the type of food you are able to eat, your self-confidence in social situations and even your self-esteem.

A tooth extraction is the procedure done to remove a tooth that is damaged beyond repair from its socket in the jawbone. Extractions are also done to remove wisdom teeth that may be impacted or create future problems.

Many extractions can be performed in our Camas office; however, more complicated procedures may be referred to one of our trusted oral surgeons.

Extractions are generally classified as either non-surgical (also known as "simple") or surgical (involving cutting through the gums and tooth). A simple procedure can quickly become a surgical procedure if the tooth fractures or refuses to loosen under pressure. We perform these procedures only after making the extraction site(s) profoundly numb.

Inlays and Onlays
Inlays or onlays are lab-made restorations that are placed on teeth when the cavity or lost tooth structure is too large to be restored by a simple filling. The process of making an inlay is very similar to a crown. After the tooth is prepared it is cemented or bonded to the tooth.

There are different materials that inlays are made of: gold, porcelain and composite resins are among them. Porcelain and composite inlays and onlays are cosmetic alternatives to fillings and are very strong compared to regular white fillings. Gold inlays and onlays are also good alternatives but their appearance has made them less popular.

TMJ is the joint that connects the lower and upper jaw (skull). The term TMJ stands for Temporo-Mandibular Joint. This is one the most complicated joints of the whole body. It allows forward and backward moves as well as rotations and side to side movements.

TMJ is often referred to as the complications and problems with this joint. Some causes of the disease are genetics, hormones, low-level infections, auto-immune diseases, trauma, and clenching or grinding of the teeth. Diagnosis of such conditions and evaluation of causes are done by dentists experienced in TMJ problems and treatments. Some common treatments are Night Guards, Bite Guards and Bite Adjustments. Your dentist will be able to guide you toward the best treatment for you.
Endodontics (Root Canals)

Root canal treatment is a relatively simple procedure of going inside the pulp space and removing the infected and dead tissue. The pulp runs like a thread going down through the root. By the time the pulp is diseased or injured, the pulp tissue dies. Chances are you will lose the tooth if you don't remove the pulp. This space is disinfected and sealed with special materials to protect it. Then, Dr. Rinta will place a crown over the tooth which helps make it stronger.

Tooth extractions are done only as a last resort. If extraction is absolutely necessary then a dental implant can be placed in the extracted site. Dental implants can last up to a lifetime with proper daily care and regular hygiene appointments, and they are not susceptible to decay. If for some reasons, dental implants can't be placed, Dr. Rinta can place a partial, a fixed bridge or a full denture (in severe cases).
Orthodontics and Braces

In a perfect world, everyone would have perfect teeth. This is not a perfect world, and everyone is not blessed with a perfect set of teeth. Some individuals will need to have orthodontic work done to fix any dental irregularities they may have. A lot of parents struggle with deciding when is the right time to send the child to the orthodontist. This answer will vary from person-to-person, and orthodontist-to-orthodontist.

According to Dr. William Proffit (Professor at University of North Carolina's School of Dentistry) children should visit an orthodontist by the time they are seven years old. Those children who wait until after the age of 10 have a harder time correcting growth irregularities. If a dentist decides that a child needs braces, the treatment process will begin.
